In a world where safety and reliability are non-negotiable, one company is raising the bar for construction components. Nord-Lock, the pioneering brand of the international Nord-Lock Group, is once again making waves in the industry by expanding its portfolio of CE Marked washers. As of November 11, 2025, their X-series washers have officially joined the ranks of CE-certified products, marking the eighth line of Nord-Lock washers to achieve this prestigious designation.
But here's where it gets groundbreaking: The X-series washers are the first of their kind to combine Nord-Lock's signature wedge-locking technology—which prevents self-loosening—with a conical shape designed to compensate for settlement. This innovation not only reinforces Nord-Lock's position as the sole producer of secure washers with multiple CE-marked product lines but also sets a new standard for safety and performance in construction.
And this is the part most people miss: While CE Marking for many products simply means self-certification against basic EU directives, for companies like Nord-Lock, it’s a whole different ballgame. Manufacturing critical components for the building and construction sector means adhering to stringent regulations that go far beyond the basics. As Frank Götz, Nord-Lock’s global business development manager for buildings and infrastructure, explains, “For our products, CE Marking isn’t just a checkbox—it’s a guarantee of technical characteristics and functionality.”
Achieving this level of compliance is no small feat. Nord-Lock’s journey began in 2013 with its first CE Marking for Steel Construction washers, though this was limited to German standards. The real game-changer came in 2016 when the company embarked on a rigorous process to secure CE Markings under the entire European framework. This involved extensive testing, technical dossiers, European Assessment Documents (EADs), and third-party inspections. By 2023, Nord-Lock had become the first brand to offer securing washers with CE Marking, clearing the way for products like their steel and stainless steel washers.
The process for the X-series, which began in 2024, was significantly smoother. “We already had the EADs, documents, and technical dossiers in place, and inspections were ongoing,” Frank notes. “Adding the X-series was the logical next step.”
But here’s the controversial part: While CE Marking is a gateway to the European construction market—without it, Nord-Lock can’t sell its products in the EU—its impact extends far beyond Europe. Meeting these stringent criteria can pave the way for approvals in other regions, as customers worldwide begin to recognize the mark’s significance. However, some argue that the cost and complexity of achieving CE Marking could limit innovation or exclude smaller manufacturers. What do you think? Is the process worth the effort, or does it create unnecessary barriers?
For Nord-Lock, the benefits are clear. “CE Marking guarantees the working principle of our products and consistent quality over time,” Frank emphasizes. “It’s not just a mark—it’s a promise to our customers, wherever they are.”
As Nord-Lock continues to lead the way in washer technology, one thing is certain: their commitment to safety and quality is unwavering. But as the industry evolves, the question remains: Will CE Marking remain the gold standard, or will new global benchmarks emerge? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
