Mr. Patterson, determined to turn his dream into reality, navigated a maze of red tape to launch his project, which finally opened its doors on October 17. The sauna, which can accommodate up to six people, is a serene escape, offering more than just relaxation. It introduces the concept of 'contrast therapy,' an invigorating experience alternating between hot sauna sessions and cold lake plunges.
The sauna's journey began with inspiration from Tasmania's floating sauna, built by Mr. Patterson's business partner, Andrew Cairns. Located in Beechworth, it's easily accessible from Wangaratta, Albury, and even Melbourne airport. But Mr. Patterson emphasizes that it's not just about the sauna; it's about fostering a sense of community.
"Beechworth still has that community town feel," he said. "This project is about bringing people together." However, not everyone shared this vision. Some objectors feared it would become a party hotspot, but Mr. Patterson assures that alcohol is strictly prohibited.
The sauna's opening was a community affair, officially launched by Tourism North East CEO Bess Nolan-Cook and former Indigo Shire deputy mayor Bernard Gaffney. Mr. Gaffney, a strong advocate, believes the sauna has widespread local support. But is this floating sanctuary a community win or a potential source of division?
