Roof Garden - Al Jarreau (1981)

255 ratings | 25372 views
"Roof Garden" was a song originally featured on "Breakin' Away", an album by Al Jarreau, released in 1981 through the Warner Brothers Records label. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, while another of the album's tracks, "(Round, Round, Round) Blue Rondo à la Turk", received the award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Male, and the album was also nominated for Album Of The Year. Like the majority of the songs featured on "Breakin' Away", "Roof Garden" was written by Jarreau along with Tom Canning and album producer Jay Graydon. Alwin 'Al' Lopez Jarreau (born March 12, 1940) is a seven-time Grammy Award-winning American jazz singer. Jarreau was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the fifth of six children. His father was a Seventh-Day Adventist Church minister and singer, and his mother was a church pianist. The young singer and his family sang together in church concerts and in benefits, and he and his mother performed at PTA meetings. Jarreau graduated in 1962 from Ripon College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He went on to earn a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa, and worked as a rehabilitation counselor in San Francisco while moonlighting with a jazz trio headed by George Duke. In 1967, he joined forces with acoustic guitarist Julio Martinez, and the duo became the star attraction at a small Sausalito nightclub called Gatsby's. This success contributed to Jarreau's decision to make professional singing his life and full-time career. Among other things, he is well known for his scat-singing and his ability to imitate conventional guitar, bass, and percussive instrumentation. He has toured and performed with numerous musicians, including Joe Sample, Chick Corea, Kathleen Battle, Miles Davis, David Sanborn, Rick Braun, and George Benson. On March 6, 2001, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. This channel is dedicated to the classic jazz music you've loved for years.
